An introduction to our school


Hillar Hanssoo Põhikool (Hillar Hanssoo Basic School) is a school with grades 1 to 9 in Middle-Estonia providing compulsory education.  There are 412 students and 43 teachers and 13 staff members in our school.

We have 24 students and 1 teacher from Ukraine at the moment.

The strength of our school is professional staff and curious and active students.  Our school participates in several educational programmes in Estonia. To name some of them – Ettevõtlik Kool (Enterprising School) and Tervist edendav Kool (Health supporting School). Our school is special for having chess in school curriculum. 

We have been participating in ERASMUS+ program since 2018. International cooperation supports realising the goals of strategic development plan of school, innovative teaching methods, supporting children with learning difficulties.

In Dec 2022 our school was given an Erasmus accreditation for projects for mobility of learners and staff (KA1) for 5 years.

The school's core values ​​are:

ENTREPRENEURSHIP - We are an inclusive school and work with the community.

 Our school`s first headmaster  Hillar Hanssoo was a passionate chess player. Out of respect for, his name was recorded in the name of the school - Paide Hillar Hanssoo Põhikool - from September 1, 2018. Since 2002, the Hillar Hanssoo memorial chess competitions have been held every year, they are known throughout the republic and are actively participated in.
